History of Myxomycete Recording in VC55

F.A. Sowter's paper (1958) recorded 63 species and 3 varieties of myxomycete fungi in the county, together with a useful introduction and bibliography. He points out that the total is low compared with neighbouring counties and that more widespread recording work is needed. The paper summarises myxomycete records since Bloxam (1842) who recorded the group for the first time. Bloxam's voucher specimens were acquired by A. Lister and are now in the Natural History Museum, London. Sowter's voucher specimens are in Leicestershire Museums Herbarium. Between the periods of Bloxam and Sowter, records were maintained by H.P. Reader and G.J.V. Bemrose as detailed above. The national expert Dr B.Ing has collected here fairly recently and may be the most up-to-date referee.
